Because the learning experienced in the early months of life is the foundation of educational success later, it is extremely important to provide early intervention services for children who are blind, visually impaired, deafblind, or visually impaired with additional disabilities. Infants and children up to the age of three and their families participate in the Perkins Infant/Toddler Program, which focuses on learning skills, activities of daily life, and motor and cognitive development. The staff provide consultation and in-service training to other teachers and other professionals working with children with visual impairments in daycare centers and early intervention programs. The program also provides outreach services to school districts for children age three and older by teachers of the visually impaired, teachers of the deafblind and orientation and mobility specialists.
